My answer is yes, if you would like to have a small, intelligent and energetic dog that is also very loving and playful with everyone. The Miniature Schnauzer is a good companion and family pet if they are treated properly and the humans show them who the pack leader is, otherwise they tend to become dominant if everything is allowed for them. These dogs love children and can do well with other dogs and non-canine pets in the house if they are socialized well. They can make excellent watchdogs and vermin hunters. These dogs need long, daily walks and at least half an hour playing sessions with the family. The Miniature Schnauzer can do well in an apartment as long as they get enough daily exercise.

The coat of the Miniature Schnauzer is a wiry, long double coat that requires trimming at least twice a year (in spring and autumn) and daily brushing to keep it from matting. They are minimal shedders. Special attention must be paid to the hair of the ears and around the eyes to prevent health problems. After meals the whiskers must be cleaned. This breed is prone to health issues like kidney stones, liver diseases, diabetes and obesity.

Training of the Miniature Schnauzer is slightly hard, as they tend to be dominant, so the trainer must be consistent, calm and firm during training. Early socialization and obedience training is very much recommended to prevent dominancy problems later.

All in all, the Miniature Schnauzer is the best for families or single persons who would like to have a docile and affectionate dog and will be able to show the dog who is the pack leader and will also provide them the necessary care to keep them happy.

I hope this article will help you decide whether the Miniature Schnauzer is the best breed for you.

Is it normal, anyway?!

Yes, it is. Just imagine the situation from the point of view of your Mini Schnauzer. He is part of the family, often treated as “the kid”, and then, suddenly, a new creature arrives and takes all the attention of his beloved family. It is quite similar to what older children feel, when a little brother/sister arrives. One of the differences is just that the dog can’t speak English

Actually, if we are aware of this ‘problem’ in advance, the situation can be handled, but it needs consciousness and to be started in time, long before the baby’s arrival. Let’s see how we can prepare our Miniature Schnauzer for the new family member.

If your dog’s daily routine has to be changed with the baby’s arrival (it probably will), you should start changing the rules much earlier, giving him plenty of time to get used to the new set up. This way it isn’t going to be so sudden and shocking. If your Miniature Schnauzer hasn’t really been trained before, it’s high time to start. He should learn at least a few commands, like sit, stay, etc. This way, he’ll be easier to handle.

Many families worry about their dog endangering the health of the child, so the best thing to do is to take your pet to the vet, get him checked and get some advice. Get your Mini Schnauzer used to the new smells, sounds in advance (blankets, lotions, toys). It’s also a good idea, that just after your baby was born, send home a blanket that the baby had been in, so your dog can experience the child’s smell in advance. It is very important to know that your Miniature Schnauzer will get a lot less attention from the mother, so when taking the baby home for the first time, the mother should greet the dog, so it is better if someone else is carrying the baby.

It is also a good idea not to leave them alone together at the first times, until your Mini Schnauzer feels comfortable with the baby, because, for example, it is very possible that the dog won’t tolerate the child’s crying very well in the beginning. You have to teach him that this is a normal sound, and you should motivate him not to bark (with treats, for example).

And the most important rule for last, maybe it seems too obvious, but it’s still worth mentioning: try to give as much attention to your Miniature Schnauzer as you can. The point is that he has to feel that you do care about him. If you keep this in mind, most probably there will be no problem. You could also try Preparing Fido, which is an amazing collection of Baby sounds designed especially to get your dog ready for the arrival of the new Baby!

Having a Miniature Schnauzer is just like having a child in the house. They love to be involved in family events and occasions and would feel bad if they are ever left out. They are an intelligent breed and make a great watchdog for they do not bark without reason and are fearless. Physically they have squarish bodies with long head with the distinctive bushy moustache and eyebrows and come in solid black, salt and pepper or silver and black. If one desires to have a Miniature Schnauzer s dog as a companion, then take effort in getting to know more about the breed by first studying the breed standard. As a strict guideline, the standard points out what a quality breed should have and points out what flaws can be observed if it’s a non-purebred. After getting more information, it’s time to visit the kennels… but one should take note of the following:

Indicators of non-quality breeders:

Immediate exchange of puppy and cash without giving proper information

Breeder cannot answer or point out what is of standard in the puppy

Unable to provide papers confirming vaccinations or bloodlines

No return policy.

Indicators of Quality breeders:

Maintaining its temperament and trademark traits of being perky, alert and affectionate

Preventing health issues such as kidney stones, diabetes and eye disorders via grooming and care education

Certificates for vaccinations and health clearances are readily available

Referrals are given openly for check-up

These tips will help one separate a trustworthy breeder from shady ones who don’t care about the breed standard. But smooth talking breeders will always try to fool people who don’t have experience with proper inspection and buying skills. But don’t worry, there is a group made of dog enthusiasts and experts that are all set to lead one out in times of trouble with a fine eye and dedication to quality… Euro Puppy!
